Spiritual Sentinels
"The inner warriors and sentinels that give us the steel to stare into the night and look at the unknown in the eye are there for everyone to call upon."
____ Mark Ryan and Chesca Potter, The Greenwood Tarot
Many people now consider themselves to be separate, alone, autonomous, put on earth to live this life and this life only. This has created a curious self-dependency: they rely upon themselves alone, upon no other agency. Yet in the Celtic world, every enterprise, however humble, would have been preceded by an appeal to the watching spirit or guardian angel for protection.
Many people today are unaware of their own guardian spirit as they are of any other source of spiritual help. To contact our guardian spirit, we have only to ask for it to be made known to us, and then spend a short period each day in meditation as we wait for it to make itself known. For those who have ignored or neglected their spiritual allies, this process of attention is very important. Just going to the threshold between the worlds and waiting, patiently, hopefully, welcomingly is an act of love that signals our readiness to cooperate.
We can envisage ourselves going to the place where we best love to be and waiting, perhaps holding some special concern in our hearts, with a view to meeting our guardian at this location. Whatever comes to your place to meet you, do not accept it unquestioningly; ask it if it is your guardian spirit. If it is not for you, do not engage with it, but neutrally let it be. Do not be surprised if your guardian spirit is not in anthropomorphic form. It may appear to you as either some kind of creature, or being or a mixture of two kinds of being. When you have met it finally - and this may take several attempts over several months, so be patient - ask your guardian spirit for help about something that concerns you, not out of curiosity but out of need.
"Spend time discovering or communing with your guardian spirit/angel"
